Name:                      DONNELL BALDWIN
Profession:            MENSWEAR STYLING EDITOR, MR. BALDWIN STYLE
Passion:                  FASHION, MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT, PEOPLE

Briefly, tell us your story

I am literally a country boy who had big city dreams. I was as a kid in North Carolina ripping out magazine ads, studying the latest trends and fashion in GQ, Esquire and Ebony magazines – not really knowing what I was doing at the time. I just knew it was something about the clothes and the people in them – the style, the grandeur, the lifestyle… it all spoke to me. I knew I wanted to be a part of that mix.

I have a pretty traditional background in terms of education and the major(s) I chose. I have a Masters in Communications and a Bachelors in Mass and Corporate Communications. I was not entirely certain where the degrees would lead me, but I knew I wanted to eventually do something in fashion.

After college and grad school I began working a part-time retail job in addition to working full-time as an Assistant Director of Admissions at a notable Art school. I loved the retail gig so much that I decided to leave my career at the art school to pursue my passion and that’s where it all began.

How do you define your personal style?

It’s quite difficult for me to define my personal style. I would have to say I’m a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, a little preppy, a little bit buttoned up and conservative. Ha! I am essentially a style chameleon. My style changes from day-to-day. Whatever the mood is for the day, that’s where and who I am. I enjoy trying new things and going against the grain.

What is your favorite piece of clothing or an accessory?

Boots, I am a huge fan of boots and that’s what you’ll see me in 90% of the time. The other 10% will be sneakers while I’m working out.

Tell us your favorite thing about your city…

I LOVE NYC! It is literally the city that never sleeps… along with being the city where dreams are made. There is an energy in NYC that is unmatched. I have yet to find another place like it and I have been fortunate enough to travel and live abroad. There is still no place like New York City!

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading my book GROOMS (shameless plug). The book is our baby (for now).

Tell us about your GROOMS BOOK…

GROOMS is the combination of a coffee table book and an instruction manual for formalwear and menswear in general. We want to inspire men to get excited about their look(s) for the big day and help guide them in the planning and execution of it, all while considering what will best complement their partner and wedding style.

Give us a couple style tips for a groom?

  1. Learn how to tie a bow tie. If you are what we call a “Classic Groom” you’ll be wearing a tuxedo and more than likely, a bow tie as well. It is imperative that you learn how to tie a bow tie to kick your style game up a couple of notches. Wearing a pre-tied bow tie is like wearing a clip-on necktie – not a good look. It’s what separates the men from the boys. (ouch.)
  2. Lose the belt. I know many men are conditioned to wearing belts with everything. We (Courtney and I) are of the school of thought that after having carefully selected your look (whether a suit or tuxedo) that you have also visited a great tailor who will make sure everything fits you impeccably. If you nave the pants fit to your body, why do you need a belt? You don’t. Ditch it and see how streamlined and sleek your look will be as a result.

What’s one style tip for a groomsman?

My one and only style tip for a gentleman who has been selected as a groomsman is to remember that it is not your day. This is not the time for you to stand out or showcase your style (unless by request) so make sure you comply with whatever your buddy, the groom, wants you to wear.
