Crews Backpack

This is a review of Moores & Giles’ Crews backpack in Titan Milled Honey. It’s a truly wonderful backpack – thoughtfully designed, superbly constructed, gorgeous to behold. This is not a soulless, mass-produced, synthetic piece of luggage — but rather clearly something built by an experienced and expert hand, with great care and love and respect.

I spent several months looking for a near-daily-use backpack for work, one of heirloom-quality that I could own for several decades and then perhaps pass on to my son — and this pack’s outstanding materials and build quality ought to give it a very good chance of lasting that long. I looked at backpacks from about ten U.S.-based manufacturers, ranging in price from a quarter of the Crews’ cost to maybe three times the price. I settled on the Crews mostly because of personal preference (features, size, aesthetics) but also because it seemed to offer the best value proposition – with many of the other larger, more recognizable manufacturers, it felt like I would be paying a premium for the brand name alone.

The pack’s zippers and buckles are heavy-gauge, with smooth, easy mechanical action. The stitching, in the leather and for the interior lining, is precise and true. The rich, wonderfully-smelling leather feels simultaneously soft and durable. And the backpack’s tasteful aesthetic is simultaneously vintage and modern; a perfect blend, to my eye.

This being a review, I feel obligated to include criticisms, but it’s a struggle to find something not to like. Here are three minor quibbles. It would be nice to have a couple of dedicated pen pockets/slots; as this pack has none, I bought a Pelican pen case and put it in one of the pack’s side pockets, to carry three pens. Further, a spot on the interior flap that displays a business-card-sized piece of paper would be useful – with fine luggage like this, in the event it ever gets lost or stolen, I always like to include my phone number and a no-questions-asked cash-reward offer. Finally, the hand-carry handle could be about an inch wider for me, to make it a little bit more comfortable for my big hands.

But in the end, I’m thrilled with the overall utility, look, and quality of the backpack; it represents leather craftsmanship at its finest.
